Assassin snail at lfs, big loaches but there are also chemicals that you can buy that would eradicate them. However I'm not sure if this is safe if you have other in-vertebra in your tank or plan on keeping them in the future.
I personally would go for the assassin.
You could also get a clean (not soap washed) plastic container with lid. Then poke some holes in it with a hot needle/wire big enough for snails, but smaller than fish and then put a sinking tablet in the container with a rock to hold it down and then just seal it and wait for them to climb in. Just make sure that there are no holes at the bottem, otherwise the snails may flush out when you pick up the container.
By the way I have snails (ramshorn/malayan trumpet snail) in 42g planted and the mts is particularly good at aerating the gravel aswell as cleaning scraps and they don't touch the plants.

Assassin snails are probably your best bet. Most of the time snails are just a big nuisance, overpopulating the tank. A few assassin snails should keep your snails in check, just wait until you have a healthy population of snails. Assassins are cool to watch too.
Clown loaches and other big loaches are too big and require large systems (55-75 gallon+ minimum), so I would go with assassins, as stated by others.
Snails that hitchhike on your plants aren;t harmful that much, in fact, they can help clean any food that falls into the substrate.

Almost certainly the snails didn't kill the plcostomus. Check you water parameters. Snails are scavengers, so they eat dead animals.
I bought three assasin snails to take care of my issue. Fortunately they have not bred, and the other snails are gone.
They are also great for plants due to the fact they bury themselves which airates the substrate and promotes growth. At least that is what I had read!
