Move this if needed, please, as these aren't quite fish :)

I'm wondering how many of you keep snails as pets - namely Mystery Snails and similar snails? I have a bunch of Mystery snails and am really enjoying them. They are all roughly the size of shooter marbles. I also have a couple of the larger Ramshorns (an inch?) Just wondering about how fast they typically grow? Also does anything special need to be done to breed them?
Mine are thriving with a goldfish, cory cats, Raiamas ssp, in my 6.6 gallon acrylic bowfront long. They pig out on all prepared fish foods and dead feeder fish.

I have kept many species of snails. I currently have Malaysian trumpet snails, red ramshorns, golden columbian ramshorns, and striped columbian ramshorns. Ramshorn snails are fairly easy to breed, they need very good water quality in order to breed though. Calcium in some form is needed to keep their shells in good shape. A high KH is an easy way to do this. If you have naturally soft and acidic water, 7 day feeders with a high calcium count or liquid calcium will supplement this. Depending on which type of ramshorn snails you have the growth will vary. Red ramshorns grow very slowly, and max at only around the size of a quarter. Columbians grow VERY fast, and can become the size of a racket ball at least. Blue and pink ramshorns are both medium sized, medium growth species. Reds are a little more difficult to breed than the columbian versions.

I have a snail breeding project, and I also keep mystery snails. In addition, I have got some saltwater snails as well.

MYSTERY SNAILS= Pomacea bridgesii.

to grow them big and fast:
temp 80-82
feed them algae disks, frozen green peas, cucumber, and boiled carrots.
for nice shiney shells: add calcium to the tank(crushed coral) you can put it in a bag and add it to the filter. keep pH above7.2 to avoid shell erosion.
to breed do as said above and leave a 1.5-2" gap above the water line. they lay eggs out of the water.

i also wanna know too what do u do with those snails?

I am breeding them to feed to my loaches.

i bread them for sale. that tank was a temp hold until i sold them. i was way overstocked. 25% h2o change daily and biweekly filter changes. '
they usually do not do well with large semi- aggressive fish. i keep some larger snails with my african cichlids. you can try. they are only a buck or two at the LFS

I've found that MANY fish will pick at their feelers, so I've given up on that, and keep my snails with only a baby golfball pearlscale goldfish, my cory cats, and my 2 Raiamas. That's it.
Even little baby jellybean convicts were picking at the snails.
