Wheres the Federal law that makes Snakeheads illegal across the entire country?
the only Federal law I know of makes it illegal to import into the country or across
state lines
SUMMARY: The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service adds all species of
snakehead fishes in the Channidae family to the list of injurious fish,
mollusks, and crustaceans. By this action, the Service prohibits the
importation into or transportation between the continental United
States, the District of Columbia, Hawaii, the Commonwealth of Puerto
Rico, or any territory or possession of the United States. The best
available information indicates that this action is necessary to
protect wildlife and wildlife resources from the purposeful or
accidental introduction and subsequent establishment of snakehead
populations in ecosystems of the United States. Live snakehead fishes
or viable eggs can be imported only by permit for scientific, medical,
educational, or zoological purposes, or without a permit by Federal
agencies solely for their own use; permits will also be required for
the interstate transportation of live snakeheads or viable eggs
currently held in the United States, for scientific, medical,
educational, or zoological purposes. This final rule becomes effective
immediately upon publication.

LIL blonde girl summary of the above :Federal law only prohibits importation Into the United states,The district of Columbia and the commonwealth of puerto rico and transportation across state lines. Therefore If i live in a state ie. WI and there are no local ordinances against posession its legal for me to keep snakeheads as long as I purchase them localy ie within the state borders-Anne

Stupid law, the most invasive and destructive fish in the country is already everywhere, the common bluegill.

Definitley. And largemouth bass. They are HIGHLY invasive. As far as I know, they are not illegal nation-wide... they are legal in VERY few states though. And interstate transportation of them is illegal, as Anne said. And they do have natural predators, and even predators here. Don't get me wrong, it's very bad that they're running around in US waters, as it is with many other invasive species... but, it's insanity to outlaw them because some are loose in rivers. LMB and bluegill aren't outlawed in a lot of states, but they're still all over where they aren't native.

lol... yep. We have a lot of invasive natives, and they've been introduced into states and areas that they don't belong.

The gambies have driven out a lot of native top minnows and a few killies but at least make good forage. I'm not saying we should cross-spread species, I'm just saying bans should be based on real science, not sound bites.

dude but the thing is that its a fishy world out there... sure theres gunna be some huge snakehead out there breeding, but theres also gunna be large mouth, blue gills, walleye, muskies, gars, pikes and catfish that are gunna eat the babies.... i mean sure they get huge but so do muskies and alligator gar, and basically all of the american cats and pikes get the same size i dont get it
