snake heads in the Philippines

The one in my sig is a BULIG(striata), they taste good.

It's avatar, not signature. I feel squeamish over cooking snakeheads though and never tried one at all.

So, any developments on snakeheads in the Philippines?

Have personally taken care of specimens of C. panaw, C. bleheri, C. micropeltes, and C. striata.

Have seen in a specialty store samples of C. lucia, C. aurantimaculata, and what passes off as C. burmanica. Picked up an additional 2 panaws yesterday.

Try as I might, I've never seen a C. maculata in country nor have I ever heard of a wild-caught specimen even though it is listed as being native to the islands.

Well, there are over 7000 islands, but still....

Channa micropeltes is a regularly brought in by the Philippine fish importers. We have new imports of this every other month. This is the most common snakehead in Philippine LFS.

I have introduced the following Channas to local hobbyists the past 2 years:

Channa aurantimaculata
Channa sp assam
Channa bleheri
Channa burmanica.... but as previously mentioned must be Channa gachua
Channa lucia
Channa marulia
Channa panaw


Hopefully my order of Channa pleurophthalma and Parachanna obscura will arrive next week... and properly identified.

Tried growing out what I thought were juvenile melasoma's and striata's that sometimes get mixed up with the feeder "kataba". Unfortunately, it turns out they were all striata's, so I have yet to see melasoma's and maculata's here as well.
