Wow awesome fish. Any advice with lure and line? Or good spots in Potomac.

I prefer using big lures to prevent them from swallowing my lures. If they do swallow, it means that your leader will be in contact with the teeth of the snakehead. And we all know what those teeth can do.

And with big lures, I can use stronger split rings and trebles without affecting the action of the lure. That means less chance of hooks/split rings giving way. Snakeheads are not fishes with lots of stamina, but they do have short bursts of energy, and that is when reinforced terminal tackle is important.

But sometimes, they just want the smaller lures.

I use 14lb fireline, with a 40lb mono/FC leader. The leader is not for the snakehead's teeth. It is for the abrasion resistance against underwater structure. They really like to head for cover when hooked. Of course, the best option is to not allow them to enter cover. So you need heavy tackle for big snakeheads.

I use bass rods for snakehead fishing. But stick to the heavier bass rods. I usually use rods of about 12-25lb.

Sorry for I'm not in the US, so I don't fish at the Potomac. Can't help with the spots. But do keep a lookout for the sure signs of them surfacing to breathe. Polarised sunglasses will help to spot them when they are coming up for air. When you spot them, cast over them and work your lure to them.

Since the snakeheads are an invasive species in your country, you don't have to care about fishing stock preservation. And so if you're lucky and they breed, you will see the schools of snakeheads. For micros, the frys are bright red and easy to spot and they will surface for air as well. The parents will be nearby. Just use a big lure to piss the parents off, and hang on tight... :naughty:

I heard they like frog lures
