SNAKEHEAD: PREDATOR or PREY?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
All hype, SH issue actually shows how pathetic our governments are and how incompetent the view the average citizen. Sad that fish and dogs are banned because of a few ignorant people at the top and their beliefs.

I'm planning a trip to Montreal in a few, hope to see some in their fish shops.

to tell you the truth, sh are a real invasive species BUT, they arent even close to being as vicious as they are said to be. there all over the place in soutflorida but from what ive seen they get really bullied by larger bass. especially peacocks. when its breeding season and they have the ball of juvies with the parents protecting them i always see peacocks come in and slash up the parents and devour the babies. idk how it is elsewhere but here its nothing more than another foreign fish that is basicly wild here now. such as oscars and many other types of south american and central american cichlids

i think they are very beautiful fish but they have been breeding like crazy in the U.S. but they are here to stay and the predator prey aspect is ive heard that a hoplius aimara can demolish a channa micropltes but thats just what i have heard so i dont know if its true but in the wild i think they are top of the food chain

Where I live,I am able to buy Giant Snakeheads at 2/3inch for 1 maybe 2bucks. It's really a matter of time before we have the same ecological problems that you guys in the USA have.
You really should be glad they are banned, although I understand it makes you mad.
Maybe there has to come something like a snakehead-license?

Snakeheads are my favorite fish. I use to have Redline Snakeheads and dwarf snakeheads. Very intelligent! The northern Snakehead is now established along the east coast. Channa Argus can survive the cold winters in the Northern states.
It is too bad they are illegal. The reason they are illegal: The national media got ahold of the Crofton, Maryland story, back in 2002.They made such a big deal out of it, blowing it way out of proportion. What happen next? The Government stepped in and decided to make them illegal. Now, if they would have taken the time and done some research, TAX PAYERS MONEY, they would have found out that they are not a problem.
Wildlife fish & game, feel we should embrace these fish, since they are here to stay. They have become great game fish. All studies/reports have shown snakeheads are not threatening other species, especially game fish.

LONG LIVE THE SNAKEHEAD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Are you serious? You are advocating a apex invasion species which will literally eat native stocks into extiction? C'mon man!

funny as it is.. I was never interested much in obtaining one as a pet.. until the whole fiasco about them and I learned more about them. and I have to agree.. some of our laws make no sense.. other then the invasive aspect ( which I agree.. they're here to stay. But I sincearly doubt they are as ecologically devistating as claimed)

IN the US you can own 20'+ snakes, few hundred pound alligator snapping turtles, tigers, lions, ect... but... You can not own a fish that stays smaller then NA's largest FW apex predetor...

something about what lurks in the water just scares the bejebus outta people...

Hi,snakeheads are prey and predator at the same time like many other fishes but they are by no way to be classified as FISHZILLA!

SnakeHeads are AWESOMEEEEEE!!!!!!!!...but i live in California

ABSOLUTELY TRUE! Black bass alone will keep snakeheads under control.

Haha. "Are you serious?" How will one more predatory species threaten your precious natives when you have so many already!!!??? Channa Argus, a species which was introduced as a food source to Japan approximately 90 years ago is on the decline ever since black bass were introduced 30 years ago! I Know this for a fact as I fish for snakeheads over here and ponds which were very productive 10 years ago have become very difficult to catch from now. All I see are black bass swimming about. Even in the few remaining ponds that are bass free, snakeheads flourish, but the amount of wildlife around these ponds is amazing. So many insects, frogs, crayfish, and small native fish species all in abundance and living together with the snake heads. They aren't the dangerous fish people make them out to be and certainly won't "eat your native stocks into extinction".
