Channa marulius. also known as cobra snakehead.

Gets 3-4 feet long. Large carnivorous fish, very similar-- for fishkeeping purposes-- to the Red Snakehead, Channa micropeltes. If you don't have an enormous pond, don't get one to keep as a pet.

They purportedly taste really good and are a major foodfish in southeast asia.

i think one of the mods should move this to the the other monster fish section. Anyhoo, nymokilla, Channa Marulius is also known as the cobra snakehead. One obvious tell tale sign is a yellow to orange spot on its tale fin. Just to be extra sure you should post pictures up, but even if you are sure post pictures up anyways.

I use to have what i thought was a Channa Marulius and for AGES i thought it was until i did a fin count and realised it was a Channa Marulioides. Both Channa's are very similar the differnece between them is where they are from. So find out if you can. Other wise you can either take a close up picture of its dorsal and anal fins and goto www.snakeheads.org to identify the fish. Took me ages to do... Hope this helps...

aside from that, the cobra will grow 5" in the time it takes the maruliodes to grow an inch

Thats insane p45. I'm not saying you're wrong but WOW. I had a marulioides for just over 3 months and it grew from a 2 and a half inch little wimp to a 7+ inch monster. I think that already is a pretty damn fast growth rate.

I know the growth rate of a fish depends of the species but a lot of it has to do with diet, water conditions etc.? No? pls correct me if i'm wrong

looked it up, maruliodes is said to be a 2-footer; at the time i typed that post I thought it was a 1-footer. so estimated growth difference wouldnt be nearly that immense, although i was already exaggerating a little anyway.

i dont think anyone's contesting that....

I was just double checking if my facts were correct... i see what you mean if you thought it was a 1 footer..

Anyways this thread is kinda going off topic now so i'll go back to it...

nymokilla hope all this info helps. if you type in channa marulius into google you'll get a few hits. but snakeheads.org is a great site..

Channa marulius is the giant snakehead, cobra snakehea, or Indian snakehead, as opposed to the much smaller Channa marulioides.
This one has been recorded at almost 73 1/2 " (183 cm) and 66lbs (30 kilo).
I have not kept one but according to an Indian government report on aquaculture the grow fast, reaching a meter in under two years in ideal conditions, they like weed grown water, deeper than most channas. They become sexually mature in 2 years. and are found in China, South East Asia, India, and Pakistan. The males are territorial and so are more suited to cage culture than pond culture, When young they can be quite attractive, here is a pic by Chan Sowyan
