Snakeheads with Cichlids?

not a good idea, SH grow quickly, anything that is smaller will end up food,

some snakeheads will "deal with" tank mates of a larger or similar size, and some species are more pron to it, but this is not a rule for any particular species, some people gte lucky... others get unlucky, I’ve had channa attack and kill fish twice there size...

Did you raise them all from fry???

bud try to raise the snakehead and the cichlids from fry..i think it might work as long as your snakehead is a medium sized or dwarf type snakehead but if the snakehead is too large like micro;striata;marulia etc dont try to mixed it but try to keep a dwarf specie then raised them from fry..i think it might work..but in the end still your decision if you want to try my suggestion

bleheris are supposed to be quite mild mannered, but with a jaw like the snake heads u can never take anything to be safe with them

one of my striatas when i kept along with a FH, put a full set of tooth marks on my over zealous FHs belly, and the FH was nearly 1.25 times bigger than the striata in length,(8"FH and 6" SH)

Not quite fry, the sh. was about 3" and the oscars a bit smaller.

How big was your chocolate as compared to the pluero???

i still have them together....giving my tank an over haul but keeping choccy and pluero....heres a video taken a couple of weeks ago

after more research I decided to wait on mixing snakeheads and
cichlids......maybe one day I'll make a snakehead only tank...

This would be a risky move since pleuro get about 20". Pleuro are the cousin of the giant micro SH and can inflict just as much damage to a fish if it decides to kill.

I recommend sticking to the smaller species of SH such as gachuas and parachanna africanna. There are other smaller species but hopefully someone can name them for you.


I don't know if they're aggressive solo but as a pack they will wreck havoc. see for yourself.

i've found pleuros to be gluttons... as soon as i go near my tank they'll rub their nose against the glass begging for food, similar to that of the video. i have 4 6" pleuros in with my 17 of my 2.5" clown loaches and there is no aggression between them at all. I will admit, they are still fairly young but from reading other people's experience with them, they seem to have a mild temperament
