so get some ointment if the snake gets sores. if it dies just get another one or find one.

Bandicoot your attitude to keeping LIVING (may I remind you) animals is appalling. Tell me this; Snakes like mud? Hmm, I didnt know garter snakes like mud? Thats not to say they dislike it... but it is not one of they're main hiding spots and I have proof (unlike you) as they will get ill health from constantly hiding in this. Other than for hiding reasons I can see no other reason a snake would like mud. Ok, and also, even IF a snake DID like mud, if it was going to cause the animal pain, suffering and possibly death, who in theyre right mind would give an animal such substances? You totally contricted yourself with 'Snakes like mud.. so give them some mud' You are indeed trying to make a comment which YOU think is beneficial (which just isnt) but isnt logical. It would be much kinder to any animal to deprive them of one luxury aslong as they thrive without it to prevent death of an animal. I dont understand why you are (trying) to 'stick up for' this snake with the comment about giving it mud if it wants it, if you also say in the same paragraph 'So what. Give it ointment. If it dies get another one'. I mean, this animal never ASKED to be taken from the wild. What bloody right do you have to enforce pain and suffering on it and kill it. Which is also what your doing taking them from the wild (IN MY OPINION), but I mean WTF?!? Jesus lad. Please nobody listen to this wanker. Anyways back to point. Garter/ribbon snakes NEED completely dry land to be healthy. I think what he has done for this setup is fine for this snake, there is no need to give it a water bowl. This snake was found by a pond. It will enjoy more water to swim in. The best thing you can do is give your pet a varied diet. Pinkies arent the best food for garters as theyre not natural prey (for this species). Fish, Crickets, Worms, and many insects should be the majority of the diet (though more insects than fish) with a little calcium supplement and you should be fine. Really sorry for my huge right but his comment really angered me, its one thing to take an animal from the wild but to enforce death/pain on it simply because you CAN get another one is inhumane. Hope my info helped :) :) :)

Not many snakes eat insects. If you can get your gartern to eat crickets then cool, but don't expect it to. The only snake I've ever got to eat insects was a Smooth Green Snake. The closest water source to my house is about 1/2 mile away. Most of the garters I've caught from there would eat earthworms, slugs and small toads for the brief time I kept them in the summer.

Seemed like a worthless rant since this thread hasn't been looked at in month.

Thanks wolfcichlid. Nice to know you appreciated it. :)

Vicious_fish garters will eat insects if given the chance. Yes, it depends on the individual snake, but as varied a diet possible is good for these snakes, as they seem to develop problems from a diet mainly of fish. Insects are also easier to supplement. IMO it wasn't worthless, if Bandicoot happened to read and maybe realise his attitude is at least a little unfair towards animals, then it was totally worth it. People need to realise animals have rights too, and if he has due to my post or anyone elses, then it was TOTALLY worth it:)

Wolfcichlid sounds like you did a good job then :)
