I always take pics of my fish without flash. I just turn on the tank lights.

What's the best method to take fish pics in max quality?

You need a decent digital camera and a way to fire your flash remotely, from above the tank. Most point and shoot digitals and cell phone cameras really aren't up to the task.

What are you shooting with?

i used to use a very crappy digital camera that was bought at the early 2000s. I recently upgraded to a much better fancy nikon. The one with the strapes and long scopes. lol
Works great.

I just notice that when you use flash, the light reflects off the tank and makes the pic look bad.

You have more than enough camera to take GREAT pictures.

To get pics like that, all you need is a speedlight and a remote hotshoe cable. The 18-55 f/3.5-5.6 lens that comes with the body is perfectly fine for your purposes. Optically, its a great lens.

The speedlight is the flash that plugs into the boot on the top of the camera and the cable allows you to remotely fire the flash that otherwise would be on top of the camera. You then fire the flash from above your tank to get that lighting effect. You can find a used speedlight for around $50 bucks. I think you can even get one that would work with your camera at Wal Mart for about the same price. The cable might be trickier, as a non-coiled cable is better for our purposes but is harder to find. More than likely you'll need to get that new. Expect to pay around $50-100 depending on the length.

I use M mode set to 1/200 shutter, ISO of 100-250, and f/9- f.13, depending on where the fish is in the water column. I normally leave all the lights on, the flash drowns everything else out.

If you need more specific pointers, hit me up in a PM. I'm happy to help. :)
