i have a small snapping turtle and next feb. im getting a 240gallon glass tank for it. the size of the tank is more than enough for her as an adult. what do you guys around here think i should do for a filter? should i buy or build? i realy need it to be quiet as possible or maybe put it in the basement and plum it through the floor. i dont feed her in the tank due to cleaning. i just put her in a rubbermaid tub full of water. any advise would be great.

I'd build a big ass sump for it. You should check out the DIY section for plan ideas. Either that or buy a couple big canister filters. They'd probably be the most quiet.

I agree!

Plants are also a big help. I put a potted peace lily in my snapper tank (two juveniles); the water quality is markedly improved, and the snappers can hide behind the pot. The plant is thriving as well; I placed it so the water level is about equal with the soil level.

I have a 500 gallon pond for mine and built a external filter out of a garbage can. I built an external frame for the can and filled with appropriate media. It works like a charm. I just rinse the internal prefilter that is made from heavy grade ac duct filter every few months. Plants also help a great deal. My snappers have been in it since they were 6 inches and now they are 12 and 16 inches. Just try not to feed large food items that they have to tear apart. That is the quickest way to foul the water.
