lol. the experts say to pick them up at the front of the carapcae, right above the head but i find it easier to pick them up on the back of the carapace. i dont trust the other way because the head is so close to your hand. it freaks me out. i know your a senior also, its kool to see other dudes the same age interested in animals
 
I actually prefer keeping hatchling turtles (especially alligators) in smaller containers. Makes it easier for them to catch fish and IME they feel more secure with less open water around them. I find hatchlings eat alot more readily when kept in smaller enclosures, other breeders have told me that the hatchlings prefer a more enclosed area with amybe a plant or 2 to hide under.
