this shop near me that deals with reptiles has what i believe to be a common snapper, its kept in a vivarium, with a pool of water, would this be suitable home permanently? or happier in a tank full of water? hes abut 1ft in shell length

I have kept a Common Snapper for over five years. I used to keep an "island" in the tank, but I never saw him use it once. I finally got rid of it, he seems to enjoy the extra space. I do keep the water level at about 20", that way he can stretch out to get a breath without swimming.

I don't know if this true about all Common Snapping Turtles, but mine seems to be fully aquatic. From what I've read about wild turtles, it seems they only come out of the water to lay eggs or move to a new pond or river occasionally.

This is an old picture, I keep the tank (96Lx24Wx30T) a little fuller these days.

Snappers do not need a bask site. Sometimes younger ones will bask, but they are pretty much aquatic. I have seen both cases of turtle basking though. Some like it, other don't even care if there is an island in the tank. Just keep the water level at a height so that the turtle will be able to stretch and poke its nose out to breath. It will be more comfortable if it does'nt need to swim to the surface each time it needs a breath.

Dan why so many empty tanks?

i just give a slight area thats a lil bit more shallow so they can poke up for air easy
