We're very proud of the kids, I think the local paper might come write it up this week. Thanks for all the nice comments!

I was going to say sounds like newspaper material! Should hang the cutting above his tank lol. Congrats again.

Wow, I just read the story, and it warmed my heart (and all that, etc.) :)

As for another story, about 3-4 months ago (I dont exactly remember), An 8" severum of mine Got into a little fight. I went for a 3-day holiday in New york, and when I came back he had a huge infection on his face! It was horrible, going all over his head. I brought him to the only vet that did fish, which was an hour and a half away, and they lacerated the wound, then used antibiotics, and did some other things I dont really remember. We stayed in a hotel out there because he had to stay for a day. Unfortunately he died over night, (And it still cost me a couple hundred $$), so its not a happy story, but at least I felt good about myself, going the extra mile, and for a fish that cost me 10$. The thing is I raised him since he was 1" long and I had had him for years.

Heres a pic of the infection pretty early on. It got twice as bad in the next couple of days.

I'm sorry to hear that your Severum didn't make it, but It's great that you tried! I raised Severums as a kid in a 40 long tank (My first "big" tank).

Congrats on the ordeal. It amazes me to see people that actually care for their reptiles enough to spend that kind of money on them. Glad I'm not the only one willing to go the distance (when needed, haven't had anything THAT bad YET). Kudos to those kids for doing what most wouldn't have.

I was just reading about the subspecies of Common Snapping Turtles and started wondering. Is Snappy Chelydra serpentina serpentina or is he Chelydra serpentina osceola? The Chelydra s. s. seems to have a less ridged shell than Snappy, but I can't be sure.

Does anyone know an easy way to distinguish between the two?

Thanks!

I know that in Chelydra serpentina osceola the tubercles on the neck are pointed while in Chelydra serpentina serpentina they are more rounded and wart-like.

Thanks,

I'll go take a look. They do seem sort of pointed (and sort of rounded)...

What's the verdict?

Good question. He looks like the Commons I find around my house. At least the coloring does. The Florida subspecies has the keels on it's shell more toward the middle of the large scutes if that helps at all.
