Sneak peak - the 190g discus tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Lately some discussion on SD, as well as the experience I've had myself, indicates that the wild discus actually prefer very little flow. It has me thinking I might get a weaker pump...

I was under the impression discus do not like heavy flow, but this could be more entrenched discus dogma that isn't true. I'm sure Jose can enlighten us non-discus keepers. :)

It all depends how you set up the returns. Like I said, my 57g has a 1017gph pump, which equals 18x turnover. The way the returns are set up though, there is no current in the tank. The discus don't seem bothered by it at all. If the returns were in the middle of the tank, I'm sure it would be a different scenario.

And also, that's why you'll see each return has a valve on it :) Reducing flow is simply a matter of turning the valve just a bit!

My pants just got tighter...

Keep us updated!

Those are those quick disconnect pieces in the three intake tubes, right? The black pieces?

Why not put them right up underneath the ball valves? What role are they playing in their current location? Just easier to reach, and you'll just put a bucket underneath when you wanted to disconnect them? Is that a bracket that you built there to hold the PVC in place? It's hard to see on my monitor.

Yeah, there's a black "shelf" with half-circle cutouts. The shelf is there to support the weight of each line. Because with a ball valve and union, it's a lot of weight. I don't want to stress the fittings up top or the bulkhead, so I added the shelf to relieve some pressure. That is why the unions are in that position.

It's basically something like this:
