Yep, these guys are certainly cool but far from little...

Species: Petenia Splendida
Size: 20" for males, 12" for females
Origin: Limited distribution in Central America (Mexico, Nicaragua, Belize, Guatemala)
Conditions: Tropical temperature, high threshold for PH and hardness. Aleged to be sensitive to amounts of disolved oxygen
Feeding: Almost exclusively pescivorous in the wild, will eagerly accept dry foods in captivity. I had a hard time getting mine to eat when I first got them - hikari pellets that I use as staple feed for all my large cichlids were not recognized as food. After some time starving however, all 4 began aggressively puncing on pellets. Live feeders are still cherished however

Here are a few pics of mine: http://www.monsterfishkeepers.com/forums/showthread.php?t=51058

How big are yours? How is there personailty

Mine grew super fast. They are not killers but they do hold their own against other fish. The coolest thing about them would be the suction cup mouth. It's huge, and It extends out and sucks in food. Just like a Datnoid's mouth.

I would prefer one of these over the regular gold/red morphs but I can't find one.

Mine are 5"(females) to 7"(males). Their temperament is best compared to that of an oscar (a bit mellower actually IMO). As per resemblence with datnoids, not only their feeding habits are simmilar, but even if you look at its face at a certain angle (when its facing you) it has a shape almost identical to that of a dat.

Yes, they do come in 2 natural varieties: a green and a red one, however finding green strin in captivity is not easy

That is a savage looking fish...i mean out of control, now i know why they call them snoots, and they can get up to 20 inches that is crazy...any other pics, would be great, or experiances

Snooks are pretty crazy, maybe i should get one of there easy going

They can be territorial, but they would be on the same level as Oscars and Gold Saum so they would be good for your tank. They don't have large teeth like Jags, Midas etc. that would do alot of damage if they ever bit your fish.

And STAB, Yeah, they really resemble dats in that way also. I actually bought my snook to replace my Datnoid that died. Couldn't find another dat, so thought I'd try a snook. :D It's the same fish, just looks different lol. Skinny face, big eyes, same mouth and lips...and always pushing the other fish away from it's space. Well, the Snook's gills also flare out when it's fighting and it looks really cool.:)
