Personally, I would say get a larger tank than a 55. These eels do create a decent amount of waste and get fairly large. Mine is just about at the 3 foot mark and at 4 1/2 years old and I couldn't imagine putting him in a 55.

One thing you want to consider...these guys very rarely come out of the rocks and swim around, so there is a good chance you will want to add something else to fill the negative space in the tank. Then you have to factor in their bio load as well and their specific conditions.

I agree with kenyansandboa. I do think you could get away with a 55 for quite sometime esp. with a large sump (say 20gal) to increase capacity. but as afformentioned it's gonna be pretty empty looking without something moving in there :grinno: and be pretty crowded down the road with the kind of narrow floorspace a 55 provides. That 12'' width makes it a tight squeeze for any active good sized fish.

Cost of setting a up a 55 vs 75 is really about the same. The tank is a tiny bit more but filtration and everything else costs the same. So yeah get a 75. . .

and get a harlequin tuskfish to keep with him. . .

because they are best fish ever!
