Yes its freshwater, I learned after I got him that they are more of a brackish/saltwater species. He is with a oscar, venn. pike, 2 texas cichlids, 2 Jag cichlids, 2 plecos, and a fossil cat. Could I add salt to make him happy without hurting my other fish?

eventually your eel will die if out of saltwater for a great length of time.
i dont want to sound like a jerk, but im kind of suprised to see that he has lasted a few months in totally freshwater

personally if it was mine i would either set up a salt tank for him or take him back to the store and get him into some saltwater there.
i think that animals that are meant for saltwater should stay there, and it upsets me that stores manipulate this to there liking so they can sell more.
i know there will be people that will tear a strip off me for saying this but just because they have been found in freshwater systems doesnt meen they should be there.
that is just my opinion.
but this is not your fault as the LFS told you it was freshwater, but you can always research before you buy and find out for yourself.

as for adding salt to your tank, im not sure how your other fish would react.

Well I put him into a brackish tank yesterday, its only a 10gal but I dout it will matter because hes taken a turn for the worse. Hes breathing really shallow and shows no interest in the shrimp pieces I put in there for him. Its a real bummer he was lots of fun to watch in my other tank. I thought he was happy and healthy a week ago but I don't think hes going to make it.

did you slowly acclimate to brackish or just dump it in. when i moved my fire eel from brackish to fresh i took 2.5 hours to be sure not to shock him.
