Snowflake Moray Eel...I'm getting mixed information from the Internets

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Well, thats the thing...

In my 75gal tank I've got a stonefish, 3 peacock eels about 5-6" each, a 11" dragon goby, 3 mollies, 2 archers and a geo jupanari (sp?) as well as a butterfly fish and fiddler crabs.

There's pretty much no hiding places I could set for them that the goby/eels couldn't enter. I am toying with getting another tank that would house the Geo, peacock eels, mollies and butterfly fish since except for the mollies, they aren't true brackish anyway. This would leave the dragon goby, stonefish and archers in my larger tank.

I certainly don't want to overstock, or put fish together that will not get a long well, but they are an amazing species that I would love to be able to fit into my tank.

All of these fish could tolerate higher salinity and would do well with the eels IMO. They are pretty laid back. If the archers are not food size, go for it. Then throw some puffers in there, LOL. Do some reading if you do a full conversion to brackish. I can't help you there.

G. tile, isn't that agressive, and while of course smaller tank mates may dissappear, generally it's not a problem like it is with some other morays. It is unfortunate they got lumped into freshwater, because although heavily brackish if anything they do better in saltwater than freshwater. Also they are quite social, they do well with a number of them between them.

Hm, my local lfs currently has one of these in stock so I've heard. I'm going to check him out.

I am hoping that it is a small specimen, better to acclimate in my tank.

Does anyone know the probability that the current eely residents - my three 5-6" peacock eels - would become possible food items for a young G. Tile?

From what I've read I don't think it would be a problem if there is an abundant source of ghost shrimp and feeder fish in the tank... but I wanted to check with you guys who seem to have personal experience.

The total last thing I'd want to do is get a fish that I like, but tries to eat all my fish heh.

Peacock eels are not BW fish. I have seen morays eat quite large foods--they unhinge their jaws like a snake.

At the moment, mine are in with a Clown Loach (their snuggle buddy), a large common pleco, a gold Jack Dempsey, and a Texas Cichlid (Cyano). Usually my FH is also in there but she is tending to fry. It takes a few weeks to train them on other food, so be prepared to feed them ghost shrimp for a while. They will also eat guppies and mine eat goldfish due to their size (around 20-21"). Keep the tank salted.
What's the SG of that tank? All your fish are FW, except the eels, so I'm confused. Also, GF aren't a natural food for them (feeders aren't a natural food for any fish--fatty & diseased). Best to get them on dead foods, like shrimp.

My eels have been living in freshwater since day one. I never said my tank was brackish. Freshwater isn't idealistic for them, but they do very well and appear quite happy. And I am quite aware of what to feed my fish. None of my fish have live food as a staple. Goldfish are not the best food for them, but they had to be converted from live when I bought them and guess what they were being fed? Don't derail the thread.

This thread is on the proper care for BW eels. Just because a fish is fed a certain thing when it's purchased, doesn't mean it's the right thing for it. Feeders are not a good food for any fish.

Most BW fish are kept in FW at a shop. It's well known that keeping BW fish in imporper conditions can cause compromised immmune systems, disease & shorter lifespans.

No reason to get snippy just because someone doesn't agree with your fishkeeping pratices. This is a discussion forum.

Live food is not a staple... but as a treat, ask how many MFKers feed live food. I was just sharing my experience with these fish.

Live food doesn't have to be goldfish anyway...
