Thank you soooo much for your replies. Really helpful. As for your question on wether or not I have kept both fish the answer is no. I am a beginner-moderate level fishkeeper, although the only /V\ONSTER fish I have ever kept are balla sharks a while back. In fact, thats the whole reason I joined MFK, to gather reserch before I get any other large fish.

Does anyone have an answer on the massivore question? Also new question: how exactly do you target feed? I guess you could just watch until the slower feeders(i.e. gars, pikes etc) have eaten, but how do you keep aggresive feeders (i.e. sunfish, cichlids, catfish etc) from eating everything:confused: sorry if this sounds stupid and thanks!:)

Massivore is a good food but most will tell you need to feed your gars a variety of foods from pellets to market shrimps to silversides. Target feeding is sort of like hand feeding, where you would present the food item (not pellets) to the gar and entice it to take the food. You can feed your more aggressive feeders first then target feed your gars to make sure they get enough to eat.

Okay thanks:) Answers my questions and yes I will be feeding a very varied diet.

Next question: Can gar (once again longnose) be kept with orange pike cichlids:confused: Still need answers for pickerel question...

I've had my gar (florida, spotted, and shortnose) with pike cichlids (still do) without any problems. As long as the pike isn't being too food aggressive it shouldn't be a problem.

Honestly, my gars are probably my most aggressive feeders, and usually the first fish in the tank to go after food. The other fish (including the cichlids) usually stay out of the way until the gars are occupied.

I keep Johanna Pikes with gar. Sometimes the pike will try to snatch a piece of krill from the gars jaws and spook the gar, but never enough to send the gar darting into anything. He has learned to swallow faster so nobody tries stealing from him.

Next question: Is there any way to estimate the diameter of a longnose based on its length:confused: If the relative proportions varies based on size, What is the average diameter of a longnose that is 8-10 inches, 15-17 inches, 18-20, and maybe 24 inches:confused: If it depends on the individual(Which I guess it does), what are the average diameters for longnoses of the above mentioned lengths:confused:

Sorry if I was confusing and thanks!:)

P.S. Still need pickerel answers...

Sorry if this is to quick after the last question(I didnt want to put so many questions in one post), But anyways I have another question: Why does everyone say you cant keep gars with RTC's:confused:Will one always eat the other:confused:Are they just not compatible:confused:I really like both fish and would like to keep both in the same tank if possible. Is it one of those combos that simply cant be done because one will always kill/out compete the other, or is it one of those combos that officially dosent work but tons of people manage to pull it of with no problems:confused:If it depends on tank size, the tank would be somwhere between 400-800 gallons.

Sorry about the long and rather repetitive post and thanks!:)

P.S. still looking for answers to pickeral question. If no one answers that question soon I will have to make a new thread for it:FIREdevil:devil:(:j/k:)
