I guess I'm going to ask this question again but slightly different, as I was not really satisfied with the answers to the question(which is really more my fault than anyones). Ok so can an AVERAGE longnose gar in any of the following size ranges GENERALY eat a piece of/whole smelt in one of the following sizes and with a width of 1 1/2-2 inches when lying on its side. okay size ranges: 8-10 inches, 15-17 inches, 18-20 inches, and around 24-30 inches. As for the diameter of the gar, I really have no idea, but if anyone could PLEASE answer my question on estimating longnose diameter based on length (which I REALLY need answers to) I (or whoever figures it out)could probably figure it out. Smelt sizes: 2 inch piece, 3 inch piece, 6-7 inch whole smelt.For width/hieght of smelt see above.

OMG really? WHy can't you just chop it up into small pieces so it can easily fit into their mouth? Why do you measure out your smelt anyways? Maybe you should chill out on the questions for a while. Just use common sence...

snowy - You don't even have a gar. I like someone who investigates beforehand but even you can see that these questions are getting way too narrow.

They will eat smaller sized pieces of fish. Why does it matter? You don't need a mathematical equation to feed your gar. If it's too big it will spit it out.

Honestly!? I said never mind. Cant we just leave it at that!? It was a stupid question, I GET THAT NOW! As for not posting questions for a while, maybe I will, maybe I wont. Madding, for the questions getting to narrow, I apologize, I can see some of my questions are to narrow now. I will try to be more general in the future.

New question: what is the best species of black bass(LMB, SMB, redeye, spotted etc.) to keep with a gar, specificaly longnose? I have found several reports of black bass with gar in large tanks, so I know it can work, i'm just not sure what species is a better tankmate for a gar. If it matters, the tank would be between 400-800 gallons(not sure about exact size yet).

Next question: Can you feed to much krill Of course, krill isnt the only thing I'll be feeding, and most of it will be frozen and blanched, if that matters, but I will be feeding a very high krill diet. So basically, can a gar(or any other fish)eat to much krill I'm worried becouse krill aparently has a fair amout of fat. Could this build up over time and lead to fish obesityIs this even trueAlso, could the krills exoskeletons build up in the fishes gut, similar to the way insect exoskelatons do(again if it matters the krill will be frozen and blanched)? Am I just being paranoid? Hopefully this question isnt so "unanswerable".

Oh P.S. is 77 degrees a good temp for adult gars, especially longnose but also shorties, florida etc.(I'll keep them warmer when small)?
