So how did you get into fish keeping?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
My girlfriend and i were in petco and we seen a very colorful betta.... we had a lil bowl for him... then i just ran with the hobby.. bought a 10 gallon... had some neons and a ghost catfish... then i bought 3 goldfish i believe.got rid of the goldfish.. then 3 gouramis.. i was only into community fish.. and then i found out that my good friend #1 Cichlid Breeder who is on mfk. Was very much into the hobby........

We went over to IRA's house(who's also on mfk..) and I saw for the first time CICHLIDS.... they were amazing... what really got me hooked was when i seen him put a slug in the tank and they demolished that poor littler sucker.. i turned and said i want those! so i got rid of everything in my 10 gallon and got a tiger oscar... then of course i had to upgrade to a 55 gallon....long story short.. i now have a 90 gallon and a 75 with MONSTERS!!

used to go to this place called tongs tropical fish and pets when i was like 8 to buy lab mice. never used them as feeders, i was just really fond of them. had them housed in a 20 gallon tank til i was 11. when all my mice started escaping i was eventually stuck with an empty 20g. started becoming a daily window shopper until i basically hired myself and the owner paid me in fish and other random animals he had there. worked and got my 20g filled with 2 archers, 2 gourami's , and a bunch of anacharis plants. the fish did well but, the anacharis eventually died.

gave my fish tank to a friend when i was 13 and, now, 21 i'm back with a 125, 90 grow out, 75, 20g QT and possibly a 360 by this weekend if all goes well with the seller.

Father always had saltwater tanks, Ive known this hobby and been active in it since I can remember.
Reptiles is a completely different story, and it is all my mothers fault. Brought home a box turtle when I was six years old. Now Ive got over 30 of them in the yard. :)

3 years ago, goldfish looked at me in the LFS, so the deal was i could get it if i got a little plastic container, like the little 8x4 inch ones, then no more. well parents started loving the goldfish, and FINALLY agreed with me, that we should get a little bigger tank, a 4 gallon kit. so the gold got bigger and after centuries of begging and saving, i was able to get a 10 gal kit.. well, after stupidity equaling overstock, which went on for about 9 months, then i thought we were moving. after selling the fish etc, and NOT moving, i was..flustered. but, then i had my chance. after saving and saving and begging, i was able to get a 55 gal kit at petsmart, i was the happiest kid in the world. i was able to get into the SA cichlids, and quickly learned on hand what it means to have an oscar and severums, and a blood parrot. but i needed space for them. well. about a year later, moving came and this time it was real. after rasing the oscar from 1" to a wopping 6", it was horrible getting rid of him. now 6 months later, living with my father, we discussed what we were going to do with my 55 for space reasons. talked about making a stand for it vs buying one. well, we went to the LFS and started wondering to the 75 gals (hehehe) and my dads saying nonono, way to big etc, too much money.. then i turn to the right, and theres a 125 gal staring at me. it was over. it was going home with me. so after what seemed like endless discussion, a month of staring at the stands lumber, we got to work, and made it official. now, im about to fill it up this friday or so, and get onto my lifes dream tank!

now...saving up for that 300 gal hhehehehehehehhehehehehehheehheeh

I'd really wanted a black ghost knife and i didn't really know much about the hobby, but we already had a random 20 gallon laying around so i set it up, got lights and a filter and put him in. of course i didn't know about cycling so he died within acouple weeks. after i figure that out i moved right along to where i am today! :D and that was around 2 years ago

I always liked catching crayfish and minnows as a kid and putting them in critter cages, they usually died in a few days.

I grew up with a 1.5g tank. Not very big but I had a veiltail goldfish in there until it died (roughly one year). Then tried to raise guppies from fry... they had a painful soapy death on day.

I already loved animals for as long as I could remember. So I naturally just wanted another tank. Asked for a big tank for Christmas a few years ago and got hook. Just got a 55g off Craigslist not too long ago... already dreaming of at least a 150g next... :naughty:

When I was 2 I saw some neon tetras in a tank my uncle owned. I wanted some fish so I persuaded my mother to get me some so she bought 3 goldfish and a bowl which I shared with another relative (who was 7) till I was 5 when I got 100% ownership as my 5 year older relative had lost interest.
