so about a month ago my parents made me get rid of my 2 senegals and my delhezi because they didnt want to put up with the tank space that would be needed. so iv been trying to plan out a setup that will keep me happy for the next couple of years or so while im in college. iv gotten a lot of really good ideas considering the largest tank im now allowed to use is a 20 long. but here's the problem. the more ideas i get the more i dont like most of them after a few days and at the front of my mind is the ever present "i want a bichir, just ONE bichir! even a cute little senny will do fine, i just want a bichir". so im coming to the conclusion that as much as my parents would absolutely despise my going behind their backs and buying/setting up something like a nice little 40 breeder and getting a cute little sen... i really dont think i want much of anything to do with this hobby at all apart from the bichir family right now. what got me thinking about this was that i realized the cabinet the 20 long is sitting on, the one my dad picked out to hold the tank- happens to be the exact dimensions of a 40 breeder. so its not like id be taking up anymore floor space. and im totally willing to ditch over half the fish i have now if it means i can replace those tanks with one bigger one and get myself a little delhezi or senegal. how do you feel about that?

Fine with me but i'm not the problem their house their rules. While not ideal a 20 long could work for a cpl years. No tankmates and go easy on the decorating-Anne

really!?!? i can do that? so at what length should a senegal be moved out of the 20 and into a bigger tank? in other words, i wolnt power feed it so it grows slow, but nonetheless i do want to make sure it gets moved out in time to not be harmed by such small housing. here's a pic of the tanks decor at the moment. would that be ok?

Thats kind of sad if you dont want any fish other than a bichir but i feel your pain only i have a 320G and think its far too small for the fish i want and my parents wont let me get a 600G :( you can do a lot with a small tank though especially if its well aquascaped they can look better then a huge badly done tank! There are loads of oddballs that you can keep in a 20G for life but ye get a 40G under there although i allways find with parents its not allways about the room they just say that because its easy i have a feeling they will find something else wrong with it when you say look it doesnt take up any more room. In the end it was my access to the room that restricted me to a 320G if i had double doors on the end of my room like we were gona do before i took the room over i could have fitted a 10x3x3 :( i want i want.
GL with convincing your parents! Just keep on at them and on and on and on they will give in ;)

I would still go with the 40 if it wont take up any more space.. then you can get a couple of sens.. :)

I would get the 40 if you can, and if your parents have a fit about it just try to explain and get them to calm down, It doesnt take up any more floor space. Also make sure the cabinet can hold around 350lbs give or take a few pounds.

Good luck man, I pretty much pushed the hobby on my parents, I had a few 10's, 20's, and my biggest was a 29. Mom said I couldn't have any more tanks so I bought a 55 and 40L on a double stand. Then I bought a 265. By that time she gave up on trying to restrict me from getting tanks. Now I have more then I have room for.

I have got the same exact problem. My dad (he and mom are separated) thinks its a waste of money, my mom said it would be ok for me to have a 125g, 29, 20 and 2x 10. BUT three months after i got the 125 she forced me to sell the 29. Now i want a 240g, and i have already told her that i am ready to sell ALL my other tanks for that 240g but she said no, so now i am stuck with a tank that cant even hold a decent sized Lapradei (the tank is 20" wide).
But i am just gonna wait til i move out and THEN get a 240 or a 300g but im 14 years old so that will not happen in the next few years.

ya, im gona be careful and make sure i do this thing right. the plan is to just set up the tanks i have now and play a waiting game over the next few months till the time is right. im a "good kid" all around so its not like im a problem child that has to be restricted in every way. i think i should be able to pull this thing off soon enough. plus that gives me time to earn enough money to comfortably do this. id like to find a way to not only be allowed to keep the 40 but also get it with their good graces to begin with as well. in fact to get the ball rolling ill go ahead and move the 5 gallon hexagonal my female CT betta is in up to my bedroom after im finish typing this.
