Sorry I just had to....

But anyways, good luck with the parental negotiation... It can be tough... I've noticed at least with my parents no matter how old you get they always view you as the same "little kid".

so about a month ago my parents made me get rid of my 2 senegals and my delhezi because they didnt want to put up with the tank space that would be needed. so iv been trying to plan out a setup that will keep me happy for the next couple of years or so while im in college. iv gotten a lot of really good ideas considering the largest tank im now allowed to use is a 20 long. but here's the problem. the more ideas i get the more i dont like most of them after a few days and at the front of my mind is the ever present "i want a bichir, just ONE bichir! even a cute little senny will do fine, i just want a bichir". so im coming to the conclusion that as much as my parents would absolutely despise my going behind their backs and buying/setting up something like a nice little 40 breeder and getting a cute little sen... i really dont think i want much of anything to do with this hobby at all apart from the bichir family right now. what got me thinking about this was that i realized the cabinet the 20 long is sitting on, the one my dad picked out to hold the tank- happens to be the exact dimensions of a 40 breeder. so its not like id be taking up anymore floor space. and im totally willing to ditch over half the fish i have now if it means i can replace those tanks with one bigger one and get myself a little delhezi or senegal. how do you feel about that?

Here is a possibility; rent a good sized furnished apartment for your parents and get them out of your house, where they seem compelled to enforce anti-fish keeping rules. They will be perfectly happy living in their own place making rules that will no longer affect you because you will still be at home, so their rules will have no bearing on what size tank you house your fish in....

:j/k:

Good luck sorting it out LOL

I'd say show them that you are mature and responsible enough to be up front with them, and put forth your argument re: same footprint. Give them the pros and cons from your point of view with emphasis that it will not impact their space concerns one iota.

The downside is they could still say no, but they'll likely listen more attentively when the senegal outgrows the 20 gal.

I have got the same exact problem. My dad (he and mom are separated) thinks its a waste of money, my mom said it would be ok for me to have a 125g, 29, 20 and 2x 10. BUT three months after i got the 125 she forced me to sell the 29. Now i want a 240g, and i have already told her that i am ready to sell ALL my other tanks for that 240g but she said no, so now i am stuck with a tank that cant even hold a decent sized Lapradei (the tank is 20" wide).
But i am just gonna wait til i move out and THEN get a 240 or a 300g but im 14 years old so that will not happen in the next few years.
poor kid , you only got a 125 gallon and your 14 :(

ya i know right, im in college and the biggest i can have at the moment without a fit from my parents is a 20 long. and thank you all. ill keep yall updated on how things go, though i have tested the waters to see what the parental units think and im pretty sure they just dont like polys.... its a long story why.

Evryone pull up a chair and lets hear the story

once upon a time there were three misconceptions. these little misnomers were brought about by three little mishaps. to begin with we will travel back in time to the magical kingdom of the oh-so-ferocious ghost shrimp. there, in the depths of their little ten gallon, they lived in peace and prosperity. all were loved by the family above that feed them and changed their water and took good care of them. but one day, the lesser god of the family above became bored. and in this bought of boredom discovered a wonderful creature called a baby senegal bichir. thinking it one of the cutest creatures he had ever seen promptly brought one home and gave it free range to roam at will in the great depths of the ten gallon. now here begins the coming of the first misconception. the others, the great gods of the family above, did not take to this cute little senegal like the lesser one had. they did not share in his love for the new comer he had named Jude. based upon this notion, they dismissed the idea that it could ever have a place of love in that little watery world much less any other watery world they might be above. nonetheless they did not find it so distasteful as to banish it back to the petsmart on the otherside of town from whence it had cometh. so, settling in, it made its home amongst the fishes and oh-so-ferocious ghost shrimp, all the while continuing to be loved dearly by the lesser one above.

now comes the second misconception. whilst Jude swam and played and frolicked as only senegals do, he happened upon one of the oh-so-ferocious ghost shrimps that the greater ones of the family above dearly loved. now you see this misconception has been saved for the telling as the second because it is two fold. you see, while the greater ones above loved the shrimp, so it was that Jude loved them too. but their loves were not of the same nature. and when it happen upon that the greaters of the family had found out what Jude had been doing they were greatly disappointed. such dismay swept through the kingdom that the greaters found themselves hating the senegal even more and calling a monster, though all the while the one who brought it home continued to see it for the lovable pet that it was. so it fell from dis/grace into malevolent disdain. its advocate remained strong however and pleaded its case. so it was that a compromise was formed. the sen was not to be sent back the petsmart on the other side of town from whence it had cometh but instead set apart in a watery world of his own.

after adjusting to his new palace, Jude was no longer aloud to love the oh-so-ferocious ghost shrimp as he once had. with this, the lesser one above was forced to find a new sustenance for him, hikari carnivore sinking pellets. these were taken greedily by the little Jude, but it was not to last; for here comes the telling of the third and final misconception. the pellets carried with them a distinctive odor. its purpose was to attract that which it was made for. unfortunately it had the ability to repel others, such as the greaters of those above. they, already having it in their minds that this fish and his friends (a second sen and a delhezi had joined Jude by this time, there names were Phoenix and Pan, respectively) were of no good use and did not deserve the love that the lesser one gave them, went about the kingdom and smelled the foul odor. whilst hearing that it was caused by the pellets and not the fish - they did not listen - and instead assigned the cause of the foul odor to the fish themselves and thus knighted them as "unclean, and filthy, and bringers of bad bacteria". and so it was that Jude and his friends had to leave completely, banished, for good. though they did not go back the the petsmart on the other side of town from whence they had cometh (well the two sens any way) they were made to take up temporary residence in a the care of another local merchant who had dealings with the trade of such creatures.

to this day the greaters do not like bichirs, though that is mostly on the part of dad and not so much the mom, who probably does sympathize with the lesser one somewhat.

THE END

this is where the lesser masters his skills of the baseball bat and busts some greater knee caps while they sleep!!! :D
