adding peat is the best and safest method i know for simulating a black water environment. It's full of tannins that leach into the water and lower ph. Some people add it to the filter, others add a small pantyhose sack somewhere unseen in the tank, and i've even heard of kilifish keepers using it as substrate.
using RO water is also probably a good way to go. pure chemical H20. it seperates water into acidic/soft and basic/hard. You can use the basic hard portion for african cichlids, and marine tanks, and the other stuff for amazon tanks.
