So... I got a Channel.

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I really have no idea.
I've never set-up a pond before.
Was thinking of going with a DIY Sump or something of that affect. Such as the DIY Five gallon bucket filter.
What would you reccomend? I'm on a budget so that's why I'm leaning more towards DIY.

umm probably get a brand new garbage bin in the 15 gallon range, some bioballz a 1100lph pump and a length of hose and watch it go.

Well, I've got a 35 gallon tank sitting around that I was going to put something in, but I could turn it into a nice filter using DIY instructions from MFK.

Yeah, its an odd shape.
Right now I'm working on getting a 180G 5ft diameter rubbermaid though, wich will be a great pond for the channel, might even add some pond mates. Can you say aro?

Thats exactly what I thought when I read through. I was imagined a bone and then halved it and I was like wow, thats going to be an interesting pond.

Yeah, it would certainly be "Interesting" Haha.
Going with a 5ft diameter rubbermaid instead though.

The channels doing pretty good, hiding under a slate cave with my two plecs. Last night I saw him eat a few of the shrimp pellets I offered. Really cool cat, his long whiskers are awesome. :headbang2

Cant wait until he's bigger.

I'd make a barrel filter and burry it beside the pond so that you won't lose water pressure to it. Then you will have a 55 gal filter. You could do it like a modified version of mine. Basically I use two fluval fx5s as prefilters, you can use your 5 gal bucket, and just run the pump to there. Fill it full of nylon pillow batting. Just make sure that the water goes in sequence from the pond to the pump, to the prefilter(5 gal) to the bio filter(55 gal). You can get used 55 gal barrels from carwash for next to nothing. Mine costed me $5. Basically they will charge you the same price for what they get for recycling them. Unless they don't get any money and have to pay to get them shipped off then they will just give them to you. Make sure that they line into the filter comes from the top of the barrel then the water can drip through pvc that's drilled and you'll have yourself a wet/dry system.

Awesome, thanks for the tip!
My brother-in-law's mom has two large ponds like I said earlyer and I'm going to see if they have any stuff the dont need/want anymore like pumps or whatever.

The pond is 180 Gallons, but its 5ft diameter. Not a whole lot of water to filter so it shouldnt be hard.
