Hey gang, so after too long of a break from fishkeeping (almost 20 years) I recently got back into it with a an aqueon 54gal corner tank.

So after beefing up the stand with 2x4s and completely waterproofing the inside of the stand all my filtration is complete.... I think?

So I am running 2 filstar xps canister filters using for biological filtration (both rated for tanks up to 175 gallons),
my media in the canisters is the pre sponges they came with and plenty of lava rock and pot scrubbies. Both canisters have pre sponge on the intakes.

A penguin 200 mainly used for mechanical filtration without a presponge, a sponge filter powered by an air pump (which Im only keeping in the tank to use for quarantine tank when needed) but rated for 100 gallon tanks, and a power head running a smaller sponge filter (again thinking ahead for when I might need a seeded sponge filter for another tank.)

My tank is nearing the end of nitrogen cycle (if i can really say that?)

I plan to break a lot of rules with stocking different species from all over the world and I know with the right fish it can be harmonious (dont want to piss off any purists) but..... it happens. Apologies and respect up front!

When I say different species I mean mollies, tetras, peacocks, mbunas, gouramis, plecos, cats etc. etc.
(ouch I already feel a nerve being touched)

So my question is.....

Do I need anything else?

Personally I would stock with Mbuna only.

Personally I would stock with Mbuna only.

Why? I always appreciate thoughts and feedback.

Ok so in my tank thus far, I have 4 mollies, 2 gouramis, 1 albino danio, 1 pictus cat and a gold ram all pretty small right now with the exception of the gouramis, they are big.

My real fishkeeping experience has been with mbuna, (all types) 1000 gallons of tanks space dedicated to mbuna in previous years. So I know how cocky these guys get.

What I want to do next is add 4 or 5 peacocks and let them mature a little over a 6 month period of time. Then add some very small yellow labs (6 or so)

Then after everyone is set up and still surviving add some demasoni (just a few males)

Keep in mind this is just the general plan... I know there can be problematic fish and or just that 1 fish who is a terror.

And Oh btw, I want to add a breeding group of gold rams later. (before the mbuna)

Either way mbuna are last in the tank!

I am actually very curious as to how this will turn out. I have my mind set on a certain scenario will happen, but if that doesn't happen and the opposite happens I'll be impressed. So I'm not watching this thread.

Don't think that stock with Mbuna will work. The German Rams wouldn't stand a chance against the Peacock or Mbuna if one got aggressive.

And the mbuna with the molly?
