so i used acedtone on my arcrylic tank

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
yeah... ive only had glass tanks but I know that acetone is the chemical used to remove (read: melt, dissolve) acrylic fingernail tips in order to remove them from the natural nail. I've seen it work.

Id be kind of scared to fill that tank again. Of course the acrylic on that tank is considerably thicker than an acrylic nail tip, but still.

if you are thinking of trashing it.. let me know ill give you a few bucks for it.. ive got an above ground pond that needs a viewing window

my experience has been ok so far with acrylic tanks that have some surface damage from solvents like acetone. in particular, i have a large tank that has crazing from acrylic cement drips. i would paint the inside back panel with krylon fusion paint and live with the rest. definitely fill all used tanks outdoors to make sure they hold water.

solvent + plastic = bad

Since you painted over it already if I read that correctly. Take it out in the back yard and set it up on a waterproof stand and fill it up. Or in a garage or basement with a floor drain.

Let it sit for at least a week and slap the tank once in while. Nothing crazy, just a good whack. If it holds then your probably good to go.

You more then likely just caused cosmetic damage and not structural.

Just be on the safe side and safety check it.

don't forget to support the entire bottom of the tank. very important for acrylic tanks.

It sounds risky man. Why not try making it a Half filled enclosure. maybe use it for mudskippers or archer anebleips or other cool top water fish tht might take advantage of some jumping room. You might decorate with live plants, maybe even arrange a water feature. I would'nt just scrap it. I'd just get more creative. Might find some type of pond foam or plant to cover the paint and the cracked areas.

You can still enjoy ur monster fish without havin it all the way filled with water. Fill the gapes with cool stuff. Roots, osumunda, rolls of coco husk, cork bark panels would do.

ok guys ty very much 4 all ur input i filled it today and no leaks
gave it a whack nothing felt so solid i gave it a goood whack lol
turned my hand red but nothing to the tank =D

i think i am just left with some ugly looking scratchs nothing more but ima let it sit a week b4 i say its safe ty

add your plants as you find ones tht work. i.e. tillandsia, peperomia, other epiphytes plus some cool hard aquatic plants. Remember you may need to use pretty good lighting tho. would go over board

youtube acrylic and windex and the like and see what happens. IMO you destroyed your tank. Cracks dont ever not get bigger, expansion/contraction = boom
