I've got a international market up here in Nashville that sells LIVE Tilapia (not sure what species) for $2/lb. They're quite large as well...but kinda ugly.

I have a feeling the market you are referring to is right down the street from the LFS I was referring to!

talapia are restricted in florida. however, xenotilapia... cyphotilapia... paratalapia... etc.. are not the same thing. as many of us know the florida wildlife laws can be very confusing. for this reason every LFS should have a printout of restricted species on hand for just this type of situation and employees should refrence it when confused

I am well aware of that which is why I thought it was funny. Nile tilapia, blue tilapia etc. are illgeal but he didnt get that cyphotilapia, para and xeno etc. are not illegal and arn't the same. Trust me I have the restriceted species memeriozed as well as the fishing regulations lol.

To pick up crickets for my bearded dragon...

I decided to check out the fish section and bought a new fish (another african). Well then I figured I'd ask the guy if they can order a genus of fish I was looking for at 4inches. It was a Xenotilapia well the guys then replies "ALL tilapia are illegal in FL".... Which is not true so I proceeded to tell the guy "Only NILE Tilapia are illegal to own/transport in FL.." so he continued to tell me "ALL tilapia are illegal.." So while his coworker is looking on the list, where he finds that they CAN order xenotilpia (not in the right size though). On top of that they sell CYPHOTILPIA which is Frontosa... I didnt know Frontosa were illegal in FL.

Anyways I thought it was entertaining so I shared....

I had a similar incident happen at a now defunct LFS here in Miami, with Herotilapia being the "illegal b/c it is a tilapia"

Thats nothing, last weekend I inquired about two large retic rays in a display pond at a LFS. the not so lovely young female attended said, "you dont want to know."

Well since there was a large motoro and two large flowers I was thinking maybe they wanted a grand for the flowers and like $600 for the motoros. Because those prices are high for any fish I just figured that is why she was saying that.

Anywho, I said, "come on just try me...Im curious."

I nearly fell out when she replied casually,

"...oh 15-20 grand."

HAHA

Maybe thats pesos or something. LOL
