So if there is multiple variations of Motoros..

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Hi,

I agreed with this, even leo have different type that grow to different size.

I did some study and classification among the Marbled motoro from my collection. i have imported marbled motoro from Colombia, and out of this, i figure out at least 3 different type base on their size, shape of disc and also the pattern type, include the tail's pattern. can be roughly classify as below base on my observation, however there is no scientific support on my study, just my own opinion.

1. Marbled from Orinoco branches - got this type from Ventuari area, 2nd biggest, have light creamy pattern, the spot color is laso more yellow color. ussually thick pattern type. and tail have big spot like pattern. got some matured size which is about 16".

2. Marbled from Pto Ghaitan river - also called by the exporter as black marbled, ussually very black base color with more orange color spot, some nice one came in from this area as King royal marbled. I got many of this and most of them matured size at 15" only. this is smaller type.

3. Marbled from Orinoco river - Biggest size of marbled motoro, normally tail is solid color or very fine pattern type. got some that is near 24"

bump for any info from the stingray symposium????

Well at the symposium one thing that was mentioned of note was the fact that it would be hard to tell where your ray came from because fisherman don't want to give away their fishing spots for nice rays because then someone else may go there and start catching rays there. So often times they lie and say they come from this spot or that river to protect their source of income. So trying to pin down exactly where your motoros are coming from to pinpoint the smallest sized rays may be difficult.

Just another reason that makes it more difficult to identify rays due to their exact location not being disclosed to know what you have is really what it is....
