I have an EBJD who is certainly not the patty cake they say the blue ones are. Anyway I went to the store today to see if I can put a regular JD with him. (I know you can but where talking individual fish here). While there I was watching the JD's and the guy asks if he can help me. I told him I was just looking, after watching them for a half hour I picked the one I wanted. Not easy to tell but my best guess he is male. I told him my issue and wanted to know if it didn't work out could I return the JD. He tells me yes and that the weaker JD will change sex and they will have babies :screwy:

I have heard of some species of fish doing this but not JD's? Anyone know if this is true or is this guy clueless.

Never heard of any cichlid doing that. I know two females can pair up and lay eggs over and over with no success. Lfs employees are almost always clueless. Especially petsmart/petco ones. They once told me not to put clown loaches in my tank cuz it was gonna kill my cichlids lol... i was like oic

LOL, sounds like my recent experience. Petsmart had a pair of 1" Geo dicrozoster (labeled surinamensis) and wouldn't sell them to me because I was also buying a handful of Moenkhausia (red eye tetras). Lady: "I will not allow any cichlids in the same tank with tetras." Me.Door.Out.

the people at petco have told me the same thing and i got them anyway cause im not stupid

The most i can say is that if there's 2 males, the subdominant one will change color, but not gender... If it shows the full speckling that the dominant males show the other will see it as a threat... but yet again, IT WILL NOT CHANGE GENDER :-D:-D:-D

i actually crapped my self from laughing when i read this!!!! you need to go to those small brached pet stores with only 3 workers, these are the people that know their stuff...well most of the time. the guys that work at big stores like petco and et smart are usually clueless and are just there to make pay
