So just how smart are those guys at the LFS

i recall reading an article that a type of african cichlid can do this.

I dont think there is real evidence for JD's to change their gender.

I went to a lfs about a year and a half ago looking to buy some cheap jewel cichlids, I figured they breed easily and I could use the fry as feeders. As I was looking around at all the fish, some girl working there who was apparently an assistant manager was giving a brand new employee a tour of the aquariums and fish they had, going tank by tank. She sounded like she was really trying to impress the new employee with her knowledge.

Then she asked if I needed help, and I pointed out the jewel cichlids I wanted to buy, they had a price tag for them right on the tank. She said those weren't jewel cichlids, they were EBJDs. I pointed out EBJDs in another aquarium, and she said those were Green Texas Cichlids. I whipped out my cell phone and Googled pictures of jewel cichlids and showed them to her, and also found pictures in a cichlid book they had there. I also Googled pics of EBJDs for her. Then she agreed that the EBJDs were likely really EBJDS, but she thought maybe the jewels were Cubans. These weren't even torquise jewels, they were plain jane generic jewels. She said she couldn't sell them to me until she checked with the manager to get the correct identification on the fish, and the manager was gone for the evening.

I just laughed in disbelief and said alrighty then. I guess she didn't want a customer to show superior knowledge to her on something in front of a new employee she was trying so hard to impress. I shook my head and left the store empty handed.

Grouper is the only fish I know of that can actually change sex certainly never heard of this in cichlids

I've read of a JD female laying eggs & a few were fertile. IIRC- it was in a book by George Barlow.
,B utswitching sex is rediculous. What an ass.

They are as smart as how much money they get

How smart is my lfs? They tell me a JD is compatible with a GT. That if you want a pair you should buy 5 or 6 small fish and that Midas need to be solo or need really big tanks.

..I love it that there are only a few stores in this country that sell big cichilds, and that I can't find a Midas in every petstore and getting bad advice all day.
