you might want to try one of the filter socks that some of the guys running sumps use,designed for fishtank use so no nasties to harm fish.
I would imagine a 200 micron one would catch all the crud coming out of the spraybar/filter outlet.
Seems like a good solution to me.

This happen to me a lot with my canister filter, I would usually put my net over the outtake when I turned the filter back on. I use a pre-filter sponge on the intake so no worries of gunk in the hoses.

I also use a magnet brush hose cleaner, cleans the hoses really good, it's small but does the job perfectly.

I'm sure it's simple but do you have more information on the 5/8" hosing you can use? My hoses are probably full of crap.
