So my 16 y/o Daughter wants cichlids...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
Does no one else notice the cycling method? 2 neon tetras and a goldfish? They are not cycling fish, much too senstive. Please use the fishless cycling method.

How about a Betta? I also have to put a heater in there before the fish go in. The gold fish (a magnificent 35 cent comet specimen from Wal-Mart), can probably handle it.

goldfish work fine for cycling, and they're only 35 cents so w/e let people cycle their tank in their own way - i fishless cycled my 75 but i never bash people for using the fish method

you could go with a firemouth or a convict or some dwarfs like bolivian rams or german rams, lots of other good choices have been listed as well, keyholes etc

Even if you go S.A. you will still be very limited. With africans I think you will have a better chance of finding different types at your local fish store.

even though most africans only reach 4-6" he'd only be able to get either 1 for that tank size or like 6 to keep aggression spread out and pretty much put a canister rated for 100+ gallons on it for filtration once they grew, if he wants em to be for life it's gonna be limited either SA or african

So what kind of cichlids does the kid like btw? Oh, and yes filters filters filters, and your neons are surviving in an unheated, uncycled tank?

a pair of Brichardi or leilupi would be nice in a 20L with rock-work. Both are hearty and usually readily available. I would look into the Tang shell dwellers for a 20L if she likes Cichlids. a pair of most of those species would be very happy in that tank.

Starters should get convicts. they are pretty easy to keep. My cousin has 10 juvies in a 10 gal tank, for now.

:cry:Dude! What are you thinking? I urge from personal experience that you to stop this process ASAP. Before you know it, she'll want to get a bigger tank, like a 40 gal or something and then it really gets bad. If you don't stop this now, by next year you'll have three 120 gal tanks, and she'll next want a reef tank!!!! Just look at the addicts on this site, they all started off the same way.:naughty:

jk, I think it's a great project for a parent and child.

I know right? Hey, I've been thinking about going into Discus myself. A 120 gal, sound great if I had a place for it. I saw some Bolivian and Germas rams today and they look like the perfect cichlid starter fish.
