why not try breeding guppies??

I think it's already been established that I've weaned my gar off live because I don't want to care for an additional tank. I have no intent on switching back to live.

And thanks for the advice, Otherone.

how large do needlenose gars get?
a foot. but they charge and dash a good 3 - 4 feet when scared... regardless of whats in their way. so they need a tank atleast 125 gallons.

fresh fish as one had already stated, is a good idea.

i recently bought a needle nose gar and at the LFS he was hand fed thawed silverfish
just be sure to cut them into bit size pieces for him hehe

gratz on the non live feeding

Deff a gratz for that, I really wish I had gotten my scomb onto non-live maybe he would have lived longer.

I've gotten my needlenose gar totally off feeders. He eats pellets, shrimp, worms, and sometimes massovire delite. He's one of my favorite fish.

thanks...the lfs i bought it from trained it to be hand fed and i always get a kick when i feed it
ive even noticed the needle nose gar eating the flake food for my gouramis hehe
i think today or tomorrow i gonna feed him a feeder...never actually had a fish that can hunt/kill smaller fish hehe

you can try just holding/moving slowly a thaswed fish infront of the needlenose...

I recently trained mine on krill as well. I don't know if he's getting enough nutrition out of them though. I might try insects.

Holy old threads Batman!

Anyway, if you don't think krill is enough, you could try feeding chunks of fresh fish fillets. I like to feed my stubborn predators trout chunks. They LOVE trout chunks!
