And I'm trying to talk him out of it lol.
The guy at our LFS said they only get as big as the tank, is he right? This sounded odd to me...
What size of tank will we need for a foot long aro, and how quickly will it grow (presuming good water quality and good nutrition)??
Do they need any special filtration/lighting or will the usual for the tank size do?
Please give me some shocking numbers so I can dissuade him!
Thanks

Well say you start with a 6" silver aro. Within 4 to 6 months it'll be 12" long. Within 18 to 24 months you'll have a 24" monster on your hands and will have to have a least a 180g 6'x2'x2' tank. BTW at this point the aro still has more growing to do so plan on even a bigger tank.

yea that lfs owner has something wrong with his head:screwy:

The fish only get as big as the tank they are in is a LIE. Your aro has the potential to be 2'+ easily assuming good water and proper nutrition. Not really any special lighting but good filtration is a must. I would say atleast 240gal for an adult depending on the footprint.

well i guess thats covered.

buying an arowana is like buying a dog. small n cute, but get big n eat a lot over time. be prepaired. and be ready to have a friend for life. they live 4x longer then dogs.

I bigboss!

the pet shop guy is trying to earn his commission. Probably due to recent cuts on staffing and labour, he feels his job is in danger.
Ok that was a little bad touch... no offence to anyone being held redundan. back to the topic
as everyone has said, aros are monsters.

this website is MONSTERFISHKEEPERS.... ther is awhole section on AROWANAS because they r monsters lol

a foot long aro is a baby!
it will get to 24 inch in 1 to 2 years easy!
general rule is the fish should be only 1 quarter of the tanks length and the depth of the tank should be more than the length of the fish.. Example:

Fish: length is 2 foot
Tank: Length is 8 foot and depth is 2 foot.

in the arowanas case, depends on what arowana

SILVER AROWANAS are long and huge.

becareful
you will need a MINIMUM 6 foot tank by 2 foot by 2 foot

The fish WILL only grow to the size of the tank

because it will die (prematurely) before it has a chance to grow to it's potential.

That is what I was going to say, also....

but, in the meantime, the fish will grow deformed and possibly with severe problems due to lack of space....
