So my partner wants an Aro...

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
24" is easy mine are 24"+ and 30"+ give them room to grow and they will. mine were grown out in a 750 now have a 585. hopefully I can get the funds to build a 1K tank in a few years.

Well say you start with a 6" silver aro. Within 4 to 6 months it'll be 12" long. Within 18 to 24 months you'll have a 24" monster on your hands and will have to have a least a 180g 6'x2'x2' tank. BTW at this point the aro still has more growing to do so plan on even a bigger tank.
Well put

Yes it's a silver, can't afford much else in NZ lol.
I couldn't believe he said that! I work in a pet store and I KNOW how fish grow, but my partner won't believe me when I say the LFS guy was full of it. He said the same thing about my Ornate Bichir grrrrrrr.
I seriously don't want one, it's way too much of a commitment and there's no way we would have the space, not to mention money, for a tank that size. I'm struggling to find room for my tanks let alone another MASSIVE one! Bloody males and their love of big predatory things...
Sorry for the rant lol but I will show him this thread and hopefully he will go off the idea. Or I could use the ol' "It's me or the fish" line hehe...

yea that lfs owner has something wrong with his head:screwy:
Seriously, I hate it when people say " the fish will only get as big as the tank," well why aren't my tiny fish a few feet long?

bigboss: I have to apologise on behalf of males.... i am one of those predator lovers!! i have three aros:D

Silver is actually very flexible, you can realistically get away with having one under 2 foot in a to 6 foot tank
but, you will need to upgrade and it is cruel. they get so long itscrazy! and so quick too.
perhaps wonder world was trying to make a sale... i did expect better from them - but then again, hobbyists know more about monsters than pet stores, they sell it cos it has a good price margin at times.

and by the way:D there is always enough room for big tanks, it just means something has to give:D lol

but really, asilver o any aros a commitment. Im from NZ too, so i know how expensive they are here. dont buy one and try to flog it off, its never easy seling a big fish like silver aro.

ask him to contact us and read this stuff, he will realise that the pet shop guy is wrong.
or better, GOOGLE it, it will tell you that these fish get 1metre or so:D lol then he will get a fright. though 1 metre in captivity is rare i think - but more than 2 foot isnt.
YOu might think thtas small, but its darn huge!!!

yeah dont listen to that gut you will need like a 72X36X24 for it to be very contempt
