You can start with a 55 gallon, but have a 75 gallon ready and be prepared to upgrade from there.

any estimate on how long 1 could be housed in a 55g? we saw a good deal on a 55g so we were thinking of starting with that if it would work for a maybe a year or 2.

With 55's being so narrow and Oscars usually getting 12" very quickly, one year might be pushing it. If you have a good sump, maybe a little longer, but he'll be getting pretty cramped. And with O's hating change so much, it will be better to buy the permanent home first. But I suppose, yes, it could be done. I wouldn't do it, though. Seem like a wasted effort to me.
