I was reading an article about polys on a different website. I found this line rather humorous.

"One special caution regarding all Polypterids needs to be mentioned here. They are all accomplished escape artists and their aquarium needs to be prepared in such a way as to block all of their possible escape routes. I once had a large (12 inch) Polypterus senegalus that managed to get out of its aquarium and decided to go for a stroll. I found it right after my cat did. Unfortunately for the cat, the Bichir wasn't in the least bit interested in being the feline's lunch and I watched as it lunged aggressively toward the cat with its mouth wide open! I returned it to its aquarium unharmed.."

It is under the personal experiences part of the article, here is a link:

That's awesome. Makes me feel a lot better about my cat being so interested in the tanks.

thats awesome; but I fear mine wouldn't be so lucky with my dogs :grinno:

Yeah i think the part about lunging at the cat was a little fabrecated

Everything else is true they like to jump out of tanks and go flooping around the room unless your tanks are on carpet that will really slow them down

the guy who wrote that article isn't a newbie or a punk making stuff up. i have no reason to doubt his account of the bichir's action, but the intention behind it is open to our interpretation, just like many other fish behavior. Anyway, whether you think the bichir was actually lunging at the cat or just happened to be acting that way regardless, given the person's credibility, i wouldn't dismiss his account of its action as just some crazy talk or fabrication.

Infblue, if you're saying the writer is credible, that carries a lot of weight because I believe you're credible. I just can't imagine a Senegalus out of water jumping towards a cat with mouth open trying to attack...it's sounds ridiculous IMO. As you say, it might have been a coincedence.
