Alright, I was talking to the lass at my lfs, very nice girl, keeps a lot of strange fish. She knows I like the wierd and wonderful types of fish, so she mentioned that she got a Pearl Arowana a few weeks back, and can order them in because the supplier has loads. They're going for £40 each, about 2-3" long. Seeing as though my birthday is two months away, I plan on setting up a tank for one, and getting an early birthday prezzie ;)

So tell me some stuff. There's plenty of info on the net, but it sure does vary. I figured best to get it from the people most dedicated to Aros.
-What size of tank will I need for a 2-3" Aro? What will e needed for the thing when it grows up (yes I know they grow huge, just wanting an average here)
-How big does one grow on average? Like, how long will it take for one to reach full length?

I'll add any more questions when I think of it, but I think I can get most other stuff of the net right now, so I won't pester you lot :)

Cheers all,
Paul

Jardini-
Can and will reach a length of around 24 inches.

Minimum tank size for adult is a 180- 6X2X2 some say larger....

Very nice fish until around 8-10 inches...then it will begin slowly picking off whatever tankmates it has.

They can grown up to around an inch a month. From what others say they tend to slow down once they get over 14 or so inches. Mine went from 4 to 10 inches in just about 6 months.

Hope this helps!

Eric

Smaller Aro's have the hurdle of transferring to a new home, and handling the change. Jardini's are very aggressive. At some point, he'll go after most everything in the tank.

They do grow fast and for life need a big tank. I'd go for it, enjoy the Aro life!

Oh yeah, the food. I let mine eat what he'll eat in 15 mins or so. Then if it's possible, remove excess to avoid waste buildup. Be careful with babies, they are fragile, look at that tiny body an think about how tiny the plumbing is in there. This stage won't last for long.

I generally use Hikari Arowana pellets "floating type" and crickets. As the Aro gets bigger, then the food will get bigger. I can't imagine how much it is going to cost to feed mine (Silver) when he's huge!

Jardini is the meanest Aro.. i'd suggest a beginner get a silver first.. cheaper and more passive to their tankmates... also you need a big tank!

Jardini are the only ones I can get :) I don't think I will be getting one until March/April, as a birthda present really ;) What can you tell me about the water conditions? I know it needs to be very clean, but do they need a high oxygen concentration?
Cheers,
Paul

Just throw a big ACE bubble wand (28") or so in the tank ..Ph pretty nuetral... 6.5- 7.5. should be set! you can order online too.

jars are cool, but can show agression as others have already said. almost more of a solo speciman in most cases. i wouldn't really get one unless u planned to keep it alone as a result to what could happen to all tankmates.
