AST is only in there till he is big enough to safely live in his own tank, he is too small right now to go into the other 90 Gal I have for him, and to be honest he is the most docile of the turtles. The Sliders all go into a pond next summer, and the Softshell will have the tank all to himself.
If you want your sliders or softy to loose a chunk or their head in the mean time, then yes its a good combo...

Starting to think some of you know nothing about AST at all and lack experience in caring for them. Commons are the aggressive ones who attack other turtles, AST's in Water are pretty docile and will not attack other turtles there size. I have kept AST's together with other Turtles for nearly 20 years, never have had one attack another Turtle even on accident.

i'm no turtle expert, i'm just going on what i've heard other people say..

And I think that is the issues, there is this myth about AST's that they are some how this big badass dangerous Turtle and I think a lot of it comes from the belief that if Commons are bad, then the larger AST must be worse. But the opposite is actually true and ASTs are in many ways a vastly different Turtle, for starters CST are aggressive as hell and will attack and eat nearly anything they can fit in their mouths, AST's on the other hand are pretty picky and choosy in what they eat. You will not catch a AST eating Pellets for example. CST are also really aggressive out of water and will attack and snap at you, AST's on the other hand unless messed with generally just open their mouth at all and try to run off. There is a lot of difference between the two, in most regards turtles like My Softshells are more aggressive Turtles than the AST.

i agree with you man, people tend to hear snapping turtle and freak. my grandpa had a snapper that he held, it only bit him once when he first got it. nice softshell though

I love my Softshell, is as comical as it gets and is vastly smarter than my other turtles, the best is that he has his favorite food and he goes nuts beggin if I try feeding him anything else.

Softies are nasty in their own rigth way, actually I dont recomend keeping them with other turtles asside their own kind...that is when not belonging to territorial species, but the kind of damage they provoque for most species is completly diferent then a ´snapper´s.
