So this is what my lazy turtles do all day!

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
I have experience with snappers of both species from handling and caring for them in other´s people colections. What you said about their behavior is rigth, however if something goes between their jaws... Zoos here have big AST on display, all have incomplete tails because they insist on keeping them together. I know a guy in spain that has a pond with several huge ones and all bear scars. Keeping them with inquisitive, less armored turtles such as sliders and softies is asking for disaster. Please put them apart asap.

I kept all my turtles together before (sliders and a common snapper). HOWEVER, that snapper had been with them since they were all hatchlings, was only ever fed pellets (no live food=less aggression), was well fed, and grew up with the other turtles and fish. By the time I got rid of the snapper he was 8" carapace length (the largest of the other turtles was 4"). He would get excited over pellets but still careful enough to eat around the other turtles.

You obviously have more experience with the alligator snappers than me, but I would be surprised if he would ignore something (head, foot, etc.) that ended up in his mouth.

I am not one to stick to usual 'rules' about compatibility, but I would say be careful and know your turtles.

These are all hatchlings also, not a one of these turtles is over 2 inches right now lol

Have you gotten the ally to eat yet?

Where did you get all your turtles?

He eats the Fish and Shrimp in the tank, but getting him too eat prepare food has been a pain with this one. I am thinking that I am going to have to put him in a smaller tank for about a week, making him hungry enough to try pellets.

The Turtles all came from numerous sources;

The AST was from Loggerhead Acres, the Softshell came from Turtlesource, the two Map from Turtleshack (I know Iknow), and the RES was a rescue animal and the Rescue center staff had no knowledge on how to take care of Turtles so I was recommended by someone there who knows me. I also have two other rather large AST's, but they are in LA right now being watched by my Dad.

No expert here in any sense, but I think AST's are ambush predators that are quite as ferocious as common snappers, but only when something gets close to their jaws. Correct?

True, I know people worry about them being together but its only a temp thing since they are all so small. So far no incidents, the other turtles have snooped around him while he is hunting, so far he hasn't snapped shut on them and usually stops hunting when he sees them.
