D80 is an excellent investment. I would recommend buying used lenses to save some cash. I deal with these guys www.jackscamera.com (they're local). Excellent service and their use lenses look new.

which lens would you reccomend for a D40?..im waiting on D50..but just in case..

really, your options are limited for the 40. Any of the ones you get will be alright, but they'll be expensive. If you plan on buying extra lenses you're better off going with a higher end camera. The 50 has been discontinued, but they still offer service and lenses.

If this is a first DSLR and you're using cost as an excuse, think about the cost of lenses, and ask yourself if you're going to want to upgrade. If you want to upgrade in the future you would be throwing money away on a D40. Go for the best camera that you can possibly get and you'll be happy with it for much longer.
I learned that the hard way.

That would depend on what type of shooting you'll be doing. If you're doing primarily fish or macro shots then your only option for a macro lens that would autofocus would be 105mm VR. That lens is actually more expensive than the D40 itself. If that's not your primarily concern then the 18-55 kit lens is decent for most stuff and also the 55-200mm VR is a great bargain zoom lens. If you're mostly shooting night shots or sports and need a fast lens, then you'll have to dig deeper in your pockets again if you want the ability to autofocus which is a must if you shoot sports. If you can go without the autofocus ability then your choices aren't so limited really. You can still buy and use the nice nikon prime lenses like the 50mm f1.8 but you'll just have to manual focus it.

I don't think that's necessarily true since ultimately if you're staying in the photography hobby then the only ones you'll be keeping longer and spending the most money on are the lenses. And you'll probably end up upgrading your camera every few years even if you have the top of the line camera now because sooner or later there will be better cameras down the road. I would love to have a D80 but it's just over my budget so I bought a D50 and been taking pictures I would have otherwise missed if I waited till I have enough money to buy a D80. The D40 isn't total waste of money since most don't need or want the features you'll find on the more expensive models. So people will just need to find out what they need and find out what they can live without and go from there.

Normally I would reccomend the 50 all day long, but it's discontinued so it makes it a little more difficult to get one. I have a D50 and love it to death. I just think you're cutting yourself a little short with a 40 (if you plan on expanding much).

there is so much more out there than what a camera comes with though:D

If you do get it, I would try to get an SB-600 flash.

Anyway you go, you'll love it.

thanks guys, i know the D50 is discontinued..but i can get it used from a place here for 400$..just not sure if they'll have any in stock when i have the money..
