check your nitrates. If they are at 40ppm a 50% will brink them down to 20ppm figure out how long they take to come back up.

Dcide how often and how much to keep it at a good level.

it will only take them down to 20ppm if u have water with zero nitrates( RO water)

40 ppm is an acceptable level, btw

Most people here do 50% weekly. But thats dealing with much more waste than what your 12 little guys produce.
Plus live plants nullify alot of nitrates. Id say 20%wc a week to keep ideal conditions.
50% a month at the least.

full planted 75g tank with some tetras guppies and other misc fish... around 12 total... how often do u recommend?

I would do a % 15-20 every week. but that's just my opinion.

again, (pointless though) with 12 little fish and a large variety/volume of live plants u really dont have to even due 20% WC if ur wq is ok.

For my tanks, 50% per week keeps nitrAtes around 10ppm most of the time. You've got to keep an eye on those nitrAtes instead of just making a habit and forgetting about why you do it. If you overfeed one week, a bigger change or an extra change might be necessary. Plants help a lot, too, but only the really tenacious water weeds make a dent for you.

Then again, I have two 10g tanks connected that only contain three feeder shrimp and a female guppy (plus snails). That setup is packed with water lettuce and I only have to do 50% about every two weeks. Sure, 25% every week would be better, but everything in there is very hardy.
