A typical outbreak can last 10 days to two weeks. Antiviral meds such as Acyclovir can speed up the healing. Some people swear that taking lysine at the start of an outbreak helps them. Unfortunately, some people develop recurring herpes. The virus can take up residence in the facial nerve ganglion, and under periods of stress (lack of rest, too much sun, mental stress, whatever) a person can have an herpes outbreak. I had a classmate who would break out with painful sores all over her face and mouth the day of an exam...just the stress of studying for the test caused an outbreak. We went to an orphange in Mexico, and being in the sun caused her to break out with herpes lesions.

If you get recurring lesions, you need to see your doctor and get an antiviral med.

Sores from stress are canker sores, which are not associated with herpes or any other virus. Obviously in this case with the other outbreaks it may have been from herpes, but not necessarily.

"Canker sores" also known as apthous ulcers, have an unknown etiology. "Cold sores" are viral lesions usually caused by one of the herpes viruses. Both apthous ulcers and herpes lesions can become recurrent conditions. Histologically, the two ulcerations are very different. Many people with recurring herpes, break out with a "cold sore" on their lips just prior to getting sick with a cold. The virus seems to take advantage of their weakened condition.

Question- if i use a chap stick type thing to moisturize, should i be discarding each stick after a single application? cause i feel like i would risk spreading the virus on myself if i reused something that had come into contact with the virus.

I got herpes as a baby. I'm told I had it extremely severally at the time. I don't really have outbreaks of it so I guess I am lucky in that respect.

When you have a lesion, it is spewing out millions of viruses. It's a highly infectious condition. As a dentist, I will not work on a patient who has an active lesion on their mouth or face, because the patient could break out with lesions all over their mouth/face. So yes, it is possible to spread the virus on yourself. Thankfully, chapstick is cheap enough to replace! An antiviral medication such as Acyclovir will definitely shorten viral outbreaks, so see your doctor, especially if you have recurring outbreaks.
