What I am about to tell you is absolutely true. It is undeniable and I could prove it if I had to.

I have two different colored fish nets. One is blue that I use to clean the waste out of the sand and one is green that I use to catch fish for whatever reason.

When I put the blue net in the water, the fish carry on as if there is no problem. Some times I even have to shew them out of the way.

The moment I put the green net in the water, they dart together in the most panicked manner--some even hitting the side of the tank. Nothing more than some of their former tank mates being caught with it has ever happened regarding that net.

This has been going on for about a year, and it wasn't until recently that I noticed it happened every time.

So, you think your fish are smart? Mine sure are!:headbang2

I agree. They are smart. My Jack knows which can of food is his. I put all my bulk food in the old containers from when I bought them individually. His can is the red can, which has his floating sticks. Other cans are green, white, or blue. I can hold each can to him and he ignores them until the red one appears. Then he flails like mad, which make my giraffe cat alert and he starts coming up to see whats going on. The jack will push him out of the way. (giraffe cat is 18 inches, jackie is only 9) I can walk anywhere in the room with that can and he follows like a puppy. :) Once they hit the water, the sticks are gone in a matter of seconds.

Don't doubt that your fish are that smart, but I'm not sure it's the color of the net that's tipping them off.

It could be the smell, but it doesn't really matter. The point is that my fish can tell which net is for cleaning and which is one to be feared--almost like a predator.

He he, next time I have a hard to catch fish, I should try the blue one! Freak 'em out.:D

I think there is a term for this behavior. I can't remember what it is though. Sorta like when a fish will come to the top of a tank for food.

I've always herd it called conditioning. There might be a longer term for it though.

As far as my pike goes, I'm not too confident in her inelligence. She knows the difference between me and my husband, but she doesn't seem too smart past that. I've had her try to eat drops of water falling into her tank. Of course, she does seem to have learned that little nets are full of food and big nets are after her lol.

Pavlovian response I think. If you use your net to feed them they'll eventually lose their fear of the net completely.

I have to say fish are smart and nothing anyone can say to me can tell me otherwise

though they are not brilliant mind you

they are smart
