So You Think Your Fish Are Smart?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
It's called conditioning. It's a part of all animal behavior. It basically works in two or three parts:

1)Behavior
2)Stimulus
3)Reward

All animals have instincts (i.e. Feed Eat Sleep Poop Hide) and Food, being the easy to "Condition" the animal with is what we associate with. The animal realizes that when the red can is introduced, it shortly gets food. That being said the Red Can is The Stimulus, and the response is swimming for the can to get food, and receiving the reward, which is a positive influence and eventually swimming for the can actually becomes and "Instinctive Behavior" for the animal. This theory was beat into my head this year by my psych teacher and in my Bio classes, thats the best I can explain it.

yea, i'm pretty sure it's conditioning, fish learning something over time. we talked about it in my ichthyology lab today when talking about fish behavior.

i've been doing an experiment with my gourami by showing him the food container before dropping the flakes in his tank. when i show him the container he starts swimming around the tank really quickly like a hyper puppy about to go for a walk, haha. he then swims to the surface to where i drop the flakes in. so yea, i'd say that fish are pretty smart:headbang2

I once caught a Northern Pike in Canada and the guide I was will tagged it. We kept trolling after releasing it and caught the same pike on a different pole. Let's just say...some fish are smarter than others.

Haha, not the sharpest rock in the river? When I pull out my Cricket Keeper my Bearded Dragon, lizard for those of you who don't know, he runs up to the glass and has some sort of like, seizure or something trying to get out and at them, lol.
