So you want your Jack dempseys to breed?

  • We are currently upgrading MFK. thanks! -neo
sorry to bump and old topic but its for a good cause

i had my first breeding success by accident with these fish!

used to keep them with 8" oscars - the dempseys were just about 2" long

they were getting bullied so set up a tempuary 15 gallon tank and moved all 4 of them into it - same home from work the next day and they have layed eggs on some bog wood!!! XD

i was so excited by it - was a lovely surprize

tryed to make them breed after that and never managed it again

but never say never!

I have about 300 JD fry right now that have been free swimming for almost a week now. They are from a little 3inch female that breed for the first time. 25% of the fry will be EBJD's. Ill try and see if i can get my half broken camera to work, and will post some pics. I really think the secret to getting them to breed is just getting them full of eggs by feeding them foods high in protein, and alot of it!! Just pack your females with protein and you'll have eggs in a few weeks!

Well, one thing that happened more by coincidence than anything else is that I reorganized my tank a bit. Suddenly the next day I found eggs.

I started a thread about this, but maybe here is good to ask as well.

Are JD pairs life time pairs or will the male breed with any female in the tank?

lol thats funny mine breed even when I dont want them too

thats what you get for having a male and female together lol:naughty:

They breed only with the female they paired up with in the tank. If you seperate the pair, they will pair up with another fish most likly.
