I dose Seachem Equilibrium to my planted tanks. Are you familiar with this product? It says restores and maintains mineral balance and GH. Would this be ok to use? What about KH how do you keep things stable?
I got mine from here:http://stores.ebay.com/purewaterclub I have seen lots of mixed reviews but I have been very happy with mine. I buy my submersible pumps at harbor freight. You can get big ones for cheap.
I used dry ferts when I was high tech planted. I have never used any seachem products. I used Co2 and balanced things out. Now I dont worry about it.
I always buy on the side of wayyyy to big, or too much. If im gonna spend the money I get what I think I could use down the road. I use API test kits but I prefer to use a ph meter. I use this one at work and home and love it:http://cgi.ebay.com/OAKTON-DIGITAL-...930?pt=LH_DefaultDomain_0&hash=item2a0c02f18a You can also find all in one meters TDS/PH/EC. They cost a lilttle bit but well worth it
As far as a RO I would get a 75-100gpd. The one I bought came with a float valve so it was set it up and forget it. Remember you will need to have a constant air supply in the storage barrel. I kept air and a heater in mine. That was it was always ready. I did a test on a batch of almond leaf extract I just made and 60ml or 2tbls dropped in haldf gallon of water dropped the ph from 8.0 to 7.3 I had to edit that from what I had posted. Did my math wrong. If you just toss the leaves in the tank they slowly leach out the tannins so it isnt a shock to the fish. I did that first and didnt like the leaf litter. I tend to try and keep things as natural as possible in my tanks. I dont think there is any room for chemicals unless its a last resort.
