how big? I used to only see larger ones

I dont recall seeing any small ones...The places here usually have dinner plate sized turtles....I have rescued a few in the past.

I actually overlooked the part in your title where you mentioned your size preference but what about when the small turtle starts to get bigger?

dude... just go to china town. they sell for like 4 dollars a pound.... There are buckets filled with them ... And if you want small ones go down Mott street in China town. There is a hong kong supermarket. They sold turtles.

Change my filter pad more often

Ill search for hatchlings in chinatown as a last resort. Frankly i do not believe they have small softshell. I dont want a red ear slider haha

Not hatchlings. But there should be some moderate-sized ones. We're talking about turtles being sold as food, not those little pet ones.

I could be wrong but I BELIEVE it is illegal to sell turtles under 4'' in NYC. So be careful about that.
